The air is crisp, the moon is high, and the forest is alive with whispers. You follow a winding path lined with glowing pumpkins, the crunch of autumn leaves echoing underfoot. Suddenly, through the trees, a grand old mansion rises before you. Its lanterns flicker, its windows glow, and the wooden doors creak open just enough to invite you inside.
Welcome to the Blackwood Mansion.
Inside, shadows dance on the walls, but instead of fear, the space hums with warmth and festive fun. The scent of chocolate brownies and fresh berries drifts through the air, mingling with the laughter of children and the magic of a storybook come to life.
The Story That Started It All

In my new children’s book, Little Chewz Celebrates Halloween, the Blackwood Mansion becomes a place where mystery and magic collide. Through whimsical rhymes, glowing pumpkins, and a cozy ending, young readers step into a world where Halloween feels festive, not frightening. It’s the perfect read-aloud for families who love spooky fun with a sprinkle of wonder.

Bringing Blackwood Mansion Into the Classroom
For teachers, the Blackwood Mansion is more than a story, it’s an opportunity to create a full sensory experience. That’s why I designed a classroom resource for Grades 4–6 that pairs perfectly with the spirit of the book.

In this lesson, students dive into:
Blackwood Berry Salad: a spooky-sweet recipe that sparks conversation about healthy eating and creativity.
Graveyard Brownies: a hands-on treat that doubles as a literacy activity, allowing students to layer imagination into their cooking.
Discussion & SEL Activities: from reflective writing prompts to group challenges, the lesson builds connection, Halloween spirit, and collaboration, the heart of Food-Based SEL.

3 Ways to Create Your Own Blackwood Mansion
Whether you’re a parent setting up a cozy corner at home or a teacher decorating the classroom, here are a few easy ways to bring a little “mansion magic” to life:

Lantern Walkway: Line your entryway (or classroom door) with battery-powered candles or DIY paper lanterns. Add a few pumpkin cutouts to give kids the feeling of approaching the mansion.
Spooky Recipe Station: Set up a “mini kitchen” corner where kids can build their own snack — like topping brownies with crushed cookies and gummy worms for a graveyard effect, or layering fruit for a Blackwood Berry Parfait.
Shadow Storytelling Wall: Hang a white sheet or large piece of paper on the wall, shine a flashlight, and let kids use their hands (or cut-out shapes) to create shadows as they tell a spooky-but-fun story. This works beautifully with rhyming verses from the book. You can also use this wall for students to write spooky quotes and positive messages to the class.
A Place for Everyone This Halloween
What I love most about the Blackwood Mansion is that it holds space for everyone:
Families can curl up with the book for a magical Halloween bedtime story.
Teachers can bring the same spirit into their classrooms with recipes, activities, and SEL learning.
Kids can experience Halloween as more than costumes and candy but as a time for connection, creativity, and courage.
