A Seed, a Song, and a Surprise

Chewz Journal • Harvest Hallow

The last time we visited Harvest Hallow, Brielle left us with something rather unexpected.

A seed.

After spending the day searching for food, moving from place to place, and discovering just how difficult survival could be without a reliable food source, that tiny seed suddenly seemed much more important.

But what happened next?

As we made our way back toward Harvest Hallow, the village was coming alive. Wagons rolled past carrying pumpkins, apples, and baskets of freshly harvested vegetables. Colourful leaves danced along the pathways, and somewhere in the distance, a fiddle was playing. The Harvest Festival was beginning! And this time, Brielle had a surprise waiting for us.

Meet Caleb Corn!
Near the edge of the village stood a rather unusual little character.

His name was Caleb Corn, and from the moment we met him, it was clear that he had a story to tell.

Calab Corn knew that the harvest was about much more than gathering pumpkins, picking apples, or celebrating the arrival of autumn.

It was about the people who came before us, the communities we build today, and the seeds we plant for tomorrow. And he had a very special way of sharing that story. Through music.

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Harvest celebrations have been part of human communities for thousands of years, although traditions look different across cultures and places.

Long ago, people gathered wild foods, hunted, and fished to survive. Over time, many communities developed farming practices, growing crops and raising animals to help provide a more predictable food supply.

Agriculture changed how many people lived. Permanent settlements grew, food could be stored, and communities developed new ways of working and sharing resources.

Today, farmers continue to grow and harvest the foods we enjoy, using knowledge passed down through generations alongside new tools and technologies.

And tomorrow?
The story continues. New seeds will be planted, new farming methods will emerge, and future generations will find their own ways to care for the land. The harvest connects all three: our past, our present, and our future.

Caleb Corn had one more surprise for us. A harvest song!

Inspired by the golden fields, autumn winds, and generations of people who have worked the land, The Harvest Road takes us on a musical journey through time.

The first verse remembers the past. The second celebrates the present. And the third looks toward the future.

As we learn the song, we are also exploring something wonderful about language: how verbs help us tell stories about what happened yesterday, what is happening today, and what might happen tomorrow.

The Harvest Is More Than a Season

As the music drifted through Harvest Hallow, I thought back to that tiny seed Brielle had placed in my hand. Something so small had led us on quite an adventure.

We had explored what life was like before farming, discovered how agriculture helped shape communities, and now found ourselves celebrating the harvest alongside a rather memorable new friend.

Perhaps that is what makes the harvest so special. It's a reminder of where our food comes from, the people and traditions behind it, and the importance of sharing what we have.

And as for Caleb Corn?
I have a feeling we haven't heard the last of him.
