Some recipes are measured with cups. The best ones are measured with memories.

Today, I wandered up the little stone path to Grandma's Cottage just as the kitchen windows were beginning to fog. The smell of bubbling cheese drifted through the screen door, and before I even knocked, I knew exactly what was waiting inside.

"You're just in time," Grandma called with a smile. "Give this a stir."

I slipped on one of her old aprons and wrapped my hands around the wooden spoon. Slowly, I stirred the creamy cheese sauce into the macaroni, just as she had shown me years ago.

Macaroni and cheese has always been one of those comfort recipes for our family. It doesn't need fancy ingredients or complicated instructions. It simply brings people together. Maybe that's why it even has its own holiday.

Every July 14, families across North America celebrate National Mac and Cheese Day, enjoying one of the world's most comforting meals. Whether it's served at family dinners, summer picnics, or rainy-day lunches, macaroni and cheese has become a tradition that spans generations. Grandma's version has certainly stood the test of time.

Just as we finished setting the table, the cottage door swung open.

"I hope we're not too late!" laughed Aunty Louise Whisk as she stepped inside with Brielle and Noah close behind.

The three of them had spent the morning running errands around town. While shopping, the kids had noticed all the National Mac and Cheese Day displays and couldn't stop asking, "What else could we make with mac and cheese?"

Grandma smiled.

"First, we enjoy the classic," she said. "Then we can have a little fun."

After lunch, we unpacked the groceries and let Brielle and Noah's imaginations lead the way. Before long, our kitchen was filled with three delicious twists on Grandma's favourite recipe.. Here are some of the fun recipes we tried:
