Turtle Tide Chewz Journal # 2

Some places make you slow down. Turtle Tide is one of them.

This morning I wandered along the shoreline just after sunrise. The sea turtles had already slipped quietly into the warm water, the waves were calm, and Aunty Colette Scoop was sweeping the sand outside the Lagoon Café.

I asked her what everyone packed before heading off for a day at the beach.

She smiled. "The best beach snacks aren't the fanciest ones," she said. "They're the ones that become part of the adventure."

So before you set off with your beach bag this summer, here are five Turtle Tide favorites that are easy to pack, fun to make, and even more fun to share.

1. Sunset Fruit Kabobs

Create colorful fruit skewers inspired by a summer sunset. You'll Need...

  • Pineapple

  • Strawberries

  • Cantaloupe

  • Kiwi

  • Grapes

  • Blueberries

Arrange the colors from light to dark so every skewer looks like the sky at sunset.

As you eat, take turns naming one thing you hope to do before summer ends. Every fruit adds another dream to your summer bucket list.

2. Beach Snack Necklaces

Create a wearable snack that doubles as a beach activity!

Before heading to the beach, poke a small hole through soft dried fruits using a clean straw, skewer, or chopstick (an adult can help with this step). Pack everything in separate containers and let kids design their own snack necklaces right on the beach.

You'll Need

  • Licorice laces (or clean food-safe string)

  • Cheerios

  • Apple Jacks

  • Fruit Loops

  • Life Cereal

  • Mini pretzels

  • Dried apple slices (holes added before packing)

  • Dried pineapple rings or chunks (poke a hole through the centre)

  • Dried apricots (fold and poke a hole)

  • Dried mango slices (roll gently and poke a hole)

  • Soft dried banana slices (if available)

  • Large raisins or dried cranberries (optional: carefully thread with adult help)

Pack each ingredient in a small container or tackle box and invite everyone to create their own colourful beach snack necklace.

Before you eat, take a walk along the shore. Every time you discover something interesting (a shell, a feather, a tiny crab, a funny-shaped rock, or a bird overhead) you earn one bite from your necklace. By the end of your walk, every necklace will tell a different beach adventure.

3. Beach Charcuterie Cones

Skip the bulky picnic basket! Fill paper cones (or parchment paper rolled into cones) with:

  • Cheese cubes

  • Grapes

  • Pretzels

  • Crackers

  • Strawberries

  • Cucumber slices

  • Mini cookies

Find a cozy spot on the beach and enjoy a "Sunset Picnic Circle," where everyone shares one favorite summer memory before taking the next bite.

4. Message in a Bottle Snack Mix

Layer your snack mix inside a reusable clear bottle.

Tie a small tag around the bottle that says: "Open when your adventure begins."

Before opening your bottle, imagine you're discovering it after it washed ashore. What message do you hope is waiting inside?

5. Sea Turtle Sandwich Pockets

Fill mini pita pockets with your favorite combinations:

  • Turkey & cheese

  • Chicken salad

  • Hummus & cucumber

  • Cream cheese & vegetables

  • Egg salad

Decorate the tops with cucumber slices to create tiny turtle shells.

Give your sea turtle a name and invent the journey it took across the ocean before arriving at your picnic blanket.

The Lagoon Café

As the afternoon drifted into evening, families slowly packed up their umbrellas. The snacks disappeared. Children were still searching for shells, comparing sandcastle designs, and telling stories they had invented together.

Aunty Colette Scoop looked out across the water and smiled.

"See?" she said.

"It was never really about the food."

"It was about giving people a reason to gather."

That's the real secret of Turtle Tide. The recipes simply begin the story and the memories are everything that happens afterward.

Pack Your Turtle Tide Beach Bag

Before your next beach adventure, see if you can bring:

☐ One snack to share

☐ One snack that tells a story

☐ One snack that becomes part of the adventure

Because at Turtle Tide it isn't about the snacks, it's the memories we create when we share our snacks!
