Virgo season (August 23–September 22) invites us to slow down, organize, and return to routines with intention. Whether or not you follow the zodiac, this earthy time of year is all about grounding, nurturing, and creating balance, values we carry into every Food-Based SEL activity at Little Chewz.

As summer winds down and kids head back to school, these five simple, nourishing recipes support both body and mind. Each snack is designed to encourage mindfulness, self-care, and healthy habits, turning everyday eating into an opportunity for connection.

1. Apple Slices with Nut Butter & Granola

Nutritional Benefits: Apples are rich in fiber and vitamin C, while nut butter adds protein and healthy fats for sustained energy.

Food-Based SEL Twist: Encourage kids to notice textures as they eat (crunchy, creamy, chewy). Use this as a mindful eating activity to build awareness.

2. Veggie Wraps with Hummus

Nutritional Benefits: Whole grain wraps provide fiber, while colorful veggies like spinach, carrots, and peppers deliver essential vitamins.

Classroom Connection: Let kids “build their own wrap” and practice sequencing (first, next, last) as a literacy + nutrition crossover.

3. Harvest Trail Mix

SEL Spin: Ask kids to pick a “focus snack”, one piece at a time, noticing flavor before moving to the next. Great for calming transitions.

4. Roasted Chickpeas

Nutritional Benefits: High in plant-based protein and iron, chickpeas support growth and energy.

Family Fun: Let kids choose their own seasoning blend (garlic, cinnamon sugar, taco spice) and give it a creative name, building ownership and imagination.

5. Zucchini Muffins

Nutritional Benefits: A sneaky way to add veggies into a favorite snack, zucchini adds hydration and vitamin A. Make sure to grate them in so the pieces are small.

Literacy Extension: Have kids write a “Muffin Mood Poem” to describe how their snack makes them feel, such as warm, cozy, or calm.

Whether you’re celebrating a Virgo in your life or simply ready to reset routines, these grounding snacks help children (and adults!) step into the season with balance and care.
